About Midwood Nature Reserve

Midwood Nature Reserve, located in central Pennsylvania, spans over 1,200 acres of protected forest, wetlands, and meadow habitats. The reserve lies within the Ridge and Valley physiographic province, featuring gently rolling hills and an array of hardwood forests dominated by oak, maple, and hickory species. It is home to a rich diversity of wildlife including whitetailed deer, eastern wild turkeys, and numerous migratory songbirds. The reserve's wetlands support amphibians and aquatic species essential to the local ecosystem. Established in 1984, Midwood Nature Reserve was created to conserve critical natural areas and provide opportunities for low-impact recreation and environmental education. Visitors can explore over 15 miles of well-marked hiking trails that wind through mature woods, meadows, and around small ponds. Birdwatchers frequent the site for seasonal sightings of warblers, woodpeckers, and raptors. Key features of the reserve include the Woodland Overlook, a popular vantage point offering views of the surrounding forest, and the historic Midwood Homestead, a preserved 19th-century farmhouse that serves as the reserve's visitor center. Fishing and non-motorized boating are allowed on designated water bodies, while seasonal guided tours and educational programs engage families and school groups. Midwood's emphasis on conservation and education makes it a valued destination for nature lovers seeking a peaceful setting to connect with Pennsylvania’s native ecosystems.
